The IEC 60204-1 standard requires the performance of tests as a prerequisite for placing electrical and electronic equipment on the market.

In Europe, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is authoritative; outside Europe, other directives and laws refer to this globally valid standard. The prescribed tests include, among others:

• Test for consistent safety potential
• Test of the insulation resistance
• Stress test and measurement of residual voltage
• Test of dielectric strength
